Periodontics encompasses treatment of diseases in the dental socket and gums (periodontium). Bacterial inflammation of the periodontium (periodontitis) develops over a long period of time without displaying any perceptible symptoms, frequently remaining unnoticed. Without treatment, pockets arise in the gums and slowly erode the jaw bone. In the end, teeth become loose and are eventually lost. Periodontic therapy comprises a pretreatment phase followed by the reduction of bacterial plaque from the root surfaces beneath the edge of the gum. To avoid periodontic diseases, we advise regular dental examinations and prophylaxis.
